Sharon Stone's health 'in the balance'

Actress Sharon Stone is expected to undergo further tests today after a doctor warned her health ‘‘hangs in the balance’’ for the next two weeks following a brain haemorrhage.

Basic Instinct star Stone, 43, was diagnosed with a subarachnoid haemorrhage earlier this week after tests showed minor bleeding in her brain.

She was expected to undergo further tests today, but doctors warned that complications from the condition usually occur within 14 days and can include strokes, seizures and the loss of mobility, speech, vision and memory.

Neurosurgery expert Dr George Teitelbaum, who is not treating the actress, said the condition was serious.

‘‘You can’t take something like this lightly,’’ he told People Magazine.

‘‘Her health hangs in the balance in the next two weeks.’’

Haemorrhages are usually caused by an aneurysm, a weakened section of a blood vessel.

Dr Teitelbaum said Stone’s chances of making a full recovery depended on where the haemorrhage had occurred and the extent of the injury.

Her chances will improve significantly if she gets through the next two weeks without suffering complications, he said.

Stone was rushed to hospital by her husband Phil Bronstein on Saturday after suffering ‘‘severe head pains’’ at her home in San Francisco, California, her spokeswoman Cindi Berger said.

Initial tests showed she had an aneurysm, but further checks showed the subarachnoid haemorrhage, or bleeding into the space between the brain and the middle membrane covering the brain.

Stone said she expected more tests, adding in a statement: ‘‘That should be the final determination at which point every part of my anatomy will have been photographed in detail.

‘‘At last the mysteries will be resolved.’’
