Taliban recaptures land from Northern Alliance

Afghanistan’s Taliban Government has recaptured some of the territory it lost to its enemies in the Northern Alliance over the past few days.

Radio Kabul reported that Taliban fighters pushed back opposition troops in the Razi district of Badghis province and killed an unspecified number of fighters.

Northern Alliance commander Abdul Rashid Dostum confirmed the report.

The Northern Alliance is a loose coalition of former warlords who joined forces when the Taliban began seizing control of Afghanistan in the early 1990s.

Over the past few days, the alliance has been seizing new territory from the Taliban while the latter was preoccupied with the threat of US military strikes.

However, the Taliban reportedly sent 3,000 troops to bolster its defences against the opposition and has apparently halted the alliance’s offensive.
