Earthquake shakes New Zealand
A strong earthquake rocked buildings and rattled windows across central New Zealand on Monday, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said.
The 5.6 magnitude quake was centred near the farming settlement of Porangahau on North Island and was felt as far away as the capital, Wellington, about 150 miles to the south.
The institute said the quake’s epicentre was 17 miles below the surface of the earth.
Police and emergency services received no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
