Police in Spain have arrested eight suspected members of the armed Basque separatist group Eta.

They have also confiscated weapons and bomb-making equipment in raids in the northern Basque region.

The raids were on apartments in the towns of Zizurkil, Zaldibia and Lasarte.

A Basque police spokesman says the operation is still open and has declined to give more details.

The state news agency EFE reports police confiscated 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of explosives, grenades and other weapons.

ETA has claimed or been blamed for 35 killings since ending its unilateral 14-month-old cease-fire in January 2000.

The group has killed about 800 people in shootings and bombings since its campaign for an independent Basque homeland began in 1968.
