Dozens hurt as trains collide in Japan

Two single-carriage trains have collided head-on in north-western Japan, injuring 25 people, at least two seriously.

The trains collided near Hossaka station in Katsuyama city, 300 kilometres north-west of Tokyo, said an official at the Katsuyama police station.

He declined to discuss details, but Katsuya Furukawa, an official at the Katsuyama fire station, said 25 people were taken to hospitals and at least two were injured seriously.

He said police have no information about how many passengers were on the trains, which were operated by Keifuku Railway Co.

The official declined to discuss details, but the drivers' compartments of both trains were badly damaged.
