Priest murdered in Jamaica

Police have found the body of a murdered Canadian Jesuit priest in a small town Jamaican church, the second Catholic priest killed on the island in less than a year.

His order in Canada said he had recently received death threats.

A church member found the body of the Rev Martin Royackers, with a bullet wound to his chest, in his office in St Theresa’s Church in the north coast town of Annotto Bay, about 30 miles from Kingston.

The Rev Joseph Horrigan, of the Jesuit Fathers of Upper Canada in Toronto, said Royackers, 41, and another priest had recently received telephone death threats.

They were involved with a proposed aid programme to put unused Government land to use for food production.
