Police and protesters clash at EU summit

Riot police and protesters have clashed for a second day as the EU summit got under way in Sweden.

Protesters, including several in black hoods, began marching towards the summit venue after a morning rally on the central Goeta square in Gothenburg.

They were blocked by police with shields who were quickly reinforced by mounted troops.

While the activists threw sticks and cobblestones, the police slowly forced them back toward the square where they continued to clash.

Yesterday more than 200 protesters were arrested after clashes between riot police and protesters as US president George W Bush met EU leaders.

The demonstrators turned violent after a stand-off as riot police surrounded the three-story brick school in which more than 400 activists suspected of planning violence were housed.

Police said more than 400 people had been detained since Thursday, with most questioned and released but dozens have been booked for violent riots and not following police orders.

Some Norwegians and Germans also had been deported.

Mr Bush has now arrived in Warsaw for the latest leg in his European tour.
