Biggs stable after latest stroke
Frail Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs was today in a stable condition after he spent another night in hospital following a suspected stroke.
The 71-year-old, who was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, south east London, on Saturday was ‘‘comfortable’’, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Yesterday son Michael, 26, said he was ‘‘very, very worried’’ about his father’s deteriorating health after he rushed to his bedside.
He added that Biggs may have to be fed with a stomach tube and criticised prison staff for refusing to cut up his food.
A statement issued by the family said Biggs’s condition appeared to be worsening.
‘‘My father is now on a drip and they are talking of feeding him by tube through his stomach. He also now has some fluid on a lung,’’ Michael Biggs said.
‘‘Apparently this may have been caused by the prison feeding him only liquids even though he can eat chopped up food.
‘‘I know how much attention my father needs and I wanted to send in a food processor but they wouldn’t let me.
‘‘I have been told he may now get a lung infection. I am very, very worried about this - I have always stressed how frail he is."
