China landslide death toll reaches 79

Five more bodies have been found in the ruins of an apartment building wrecked by a landslide in south west China, raising the final death toll to 79.

The nine-story building in the city of Chongqing was hit by the landslide on May 2.

Officials had said on Friday that rescue efforts were finished because areas where survivors might be found had been searched.

A spokesman for Chongqing city said five more bodies had been found "during the last moments of clearing away rubble".

The spokesman said relatives had claimed the bodies of the newly discovered dead, all residents of the building.

The landslide is thought to have been caused by rain loosening a hillside abutting the apartment building.
