Two crew members still on stricken boat

Two of the eight crew members from the stricken boat grounded off Mull in Scotland are still on board the vessel, but are due to be taken off by lifeboat later this morning.

A coastguard spokesman said the vessel was grounded and a full examination was being carried out.

He added: ‘‘Pumps are being used to drain water from the boat which will be thoroughly checked over and the appropriate measures will be taken.’’

The Swedish registered Lys Foss was en-route from Sweden to Belfast when it grounded, causing a hole in the port side.

Twenty tonnes of oil have leaked from the vessel which has timber, chemicals, paper and heavy oil on board.

Stuart Atkinson, watch manager for Clyde Coastguard, said: ‘‘The lifeboat is now on scene and is monitoring the situation and the vessel is hard aground.

‘‘The fire brigade has given us information with regards to the chemicals on board and although they are hazardous they are not thought to be posing any risk.’’
