Rescue operation launched for stricken boat
A major coastguard operation was under way today after a cargo ship ran aground on rocks off a Scottish island.
The 3,000 tonne Swedish vessel is believed to have hit the rocks at the northern peninsula of Mull just after 5.30am.
Clyde coastguard mounted a rescue operation and all eight crew members, who were uninjured, were transferred by lifeboat to the island.
A coastguard spokeswoman said the vessel was carrying 140 cubic tonnes of heavy diesel, 30 cubic tonnes of diesel and a small amount of hazardous waste.
She said: ‘‘The vessel is in a bad way after appearing to hit rocks and there is severe damage to a number of parts.
‘‘The hull is so badly damaged it looks like it is going to collapse and already some of the diesel onboard is leaking into the water.
‘‘The rescue operation is still under way and the scene is being monitored.’’
