Relatives of Siamese twins from Nepal are celebrating, after an operation to separate the girls succeeded.

The separation operation was carried out in Singapore and took four days.

Relatives and friends had gathered at the home of the twins' parents in Khalanga. They had been waiting around the one phone they share for news

Devkumari Khatri, 84, the great-grandmother of the twins, said: "Thank God! Now I will be able to see my great-grandchildren and I hope they come back soon. "

11-month-old Jamuna and Ganga Shrestha are in different rooms for the first time in their lives. The twins' parents are with them in Singapore.

The twins were connected at the tops of their heads and shared the same brain cavity. Their brains were partially fused and they shared many of the same blood vessels, making the surgery extremely difficult.

Abhaya Shrestha, the twins' uncle, said: "We had only 50% hope that they would survive. Now this is a miracle and we just can't describe how happy we all are to hear the news."
