Boy, 5, shoots sister, 4

A four-year-old New Orleans girl is in a critical condition after being shot in the head, apparently by her five-year-old brother.

Police in the city said they found the injured girl, Freshonda Jenkins, in the arms of her father, Fred Evans, 25, after a woman flagged down a patrol officer and said a child had been shot.

Freshonda and her brother were in a bedroom of a residence with their mother, Michelle Jenkins, 28, when the boy apparently grabbed hold of a loaded semi-automatic pistol and fired one shot as Jenkins slept, police said.

Four other siblings, aged one, three, six and 11, were in a separate room, and Evans was asleep in the living room at the time, they said. Two other children, aged eight and nine, were not home.

An investigation was under way to determine how the boy got the gun and whether either adult was responsible. No charges have been filed.
