Foot and mouth - a worldwide breakdown

Foot and mouth has struck in Britain, France, Argentina and United Arab Emirates, while other countries around the world are attempting to keep it out.

Here is a list of what is happening around the world.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: No cases. Strict travel and animal movement restrictions remain in place.

NORTHERN IRELAND: One case confirmed in South Armagh. Preliminary tests on an animal in Tyrone have proved negative.

BRITAIN: Total of 207 cases confirmed so far. All dairy, meat and livestock exports have been suspended and more than 170,000 animals have been destroyed or earmarked for slaughter. Has banned livestock movements, closed rural footpaths and cancelled some sporting events.

FRANCE: Confirmed its first case this week and immediately banned livestock exports for 15 days and stopped all livestock movements inside the country. Has begun culling 20,000 sheep imported from Britain and 30,000 French sheep that had been in contact with the British animals.

SPAIN: Livestock imports from Britain and France are banned. Passengers arriving from Britain are required to walk on disinfectant mats and officials disinfect the wheels of vehicles from Britain and France.

NORWAY: Two-week ban imposed Wednesday on imports of all meat and dairy products from most of Europe.

SWEDEN: Ban on importation of livestock, raw meat, dairy produce . Ban on feeding pigs with leftover food containing remains or products from animals that are at risk.

NETHERLANDS: Ban on transportation of cattle, pigs and goats.

BELGIUM: Ban on all imports of hoofed French and British livestock.

GERMANY: Stepping up checks at border crossings to France, with disinfectant baths for vehicles at several points. Airports disinfecting visitors from Britain and France.

SWITZERLAND: Ban imposed on cows, pigs, sheep, goats and deer from European Union.

POLAND: Animals and animal products banned from the European Union and from Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Estonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Iceland and Slovenia.

CZECH REPUBLIC: About 70 border crossings with Poland and Germany closed to pedestrians and transit of all products from animals sensitive to the virus are banned. Foreign travellers at international airports are being disinfected.

ESTONIA, LATVIA: Ban on milk, meat products, and all livestock from France. Earlier banned all cattle imports from the European Union. Visiting motorists must drive through pools of disinfectant.

UNITED STATES: Banned imports of livestock, fresh meat and unpasteurised dairy products from all 15 countries of the European Union. Airline passengers who have visited the British countryside are required to have their shoes disinfected if they appear soiled.

CANADA: Canada had banned all imports of livestock, farm products and even used farm equipment from the European Union.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Eight cases of foot-and-mouth disease confirmed. Imports of animals and birds prohibited without prior permission.

JAPAN: This week suspended imports of pork and other livestock from France. Livestock imports from Britain, Argentina, South Korea and China banned earlier.

AUSTRALIA: Has banned imports of all meat, livestock and dairy products from the European Union.

SINGAPORE: Meat and dairy imports banned from France and Argentina. Imports from Britain banned earlier.

HONDURAS: All imports of animals and animal products from the European Union suspended. A similar ban imposed on products from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

ARGENTINA: Confirmed one case of the disease Tuesday. Said last month it will vaccinate herds against the disease and has voluntarily restricted beef exports to key markets.
