British police say they believe the bomb that exploded at the BBC Television Centre in west London was the work of republican dissidents.

The so-called Real IRA is being blamed for the attack. Two coded warnings were given and bomb disposal experts were about to carry out a controlled explosion when the device went off. One person was slightly injured.

The attack follows months of warnings that the dissidents are planning a wave of bombings in Britain.

However, they have been largely inactive since securing a worldwide PR coup by launching a missile at the headquarters of MI6 last year.

Security has been stepped up at a number of locations across London and the public is being warned to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
