Scores injured in Big Apple train collision

A passenger train carrying 98 passengers in New York has collided with the back of a freight train, causing injuries to 68 people on board.

Emergency officials initially said four people had been critically injured, but a spokesman for Rural Metro Medical Services says the most serious injury is a broken leg.

Officials have not commented on what caused the crash.

The eastbound Amtrak train had just left the Syracuse station when it hit the back end of the 92-car CSX freight train, also travelling eastbound, CSX spokesman Robert Sullivan said.

Among the injured are several partially-sighted people, some with guide dogs and others in wheelchairs.

Dr Daniel Olsson at University Hospital said: "All in all, it's really not too bad at all, very minor compared to what it could have been. They're all taking it pretty much in stride."
