Quake victims treated on navy's ship

Hundreds of critically-injured earthquake survivors are being treated on an Indian navy ship.

The ship pulled into Kandla harbour to help study the effect of tremors on the seabed.

Once the seabed was pronounced safe for ships at India's largest port, the navy ship was converted into a hospital.

Many hospitals on land were destroyed by the quake and scores of staff killed.

Commodore Aspi Marker said: "All serious casualties that cannot be properly treated by hospitals on the ground are transferred here.

"Conditions on board are sterile and this is a vital need for critical patients. Camps on land are filled with dust and mud, which cannot be helped given the situation."

Some 300 patients have been treated onboard by a medical team of six.
