The western Indian state of Gujarat was worst hit, but houses were reported to have crumbled in southern Pakistan. Nepal was also hit.

The epicentre is said to be the Rann of Kutch desert plateau on the border between India and Pakistan. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 6.9

At least 18 bodies were pulled from rubble after two buildings collapsed in the Indian city of Surat.

In Pakistan, a child and an adult died when their two-storey home collapsed in the city of Hyderabad.

The quake hit in India at 0320 GMT before a Republic Day parade. Residents of the capital, New Delhi, endured about a minute of shaking.

No panic was reported at the parade, which was attended by India's top government and military leaders and foreign guests.
