12 years on, Rosetta's amazing space journey is nearly over

After 12 years in space, two of which have been spent conducting scientific operations on the comet, Rosetta will conclude it's mission on 30 September by crash landing on the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

Various ingredients regarded as crucial for the origins of life have been discovered on the comet by Rosetta's instruments since 2014.

The decision to crash land on the comet has been made as Rosetta has flown so far from the sun that its solar power will be reduced and this will affect its instruments.

Once it begins its final controlled descent in August, Rosetta will be able to make several close up measurements which scientists hope will provide them with new findings.
