12 years on, Rosetta's amazing space journey is nearly over
Various ingredients regarded as crucial for the origins of life have been discovered on the comet by Rosetta's instruments since 2014.
The decision to crash land on the comet has been made as Rosetta has flown so far from the sun that its solar power will be reduced and this will affect its instruments.
Once it begins its final controlled descent in August, Rosetta will be able to make several close up measurements which scientists hope will provide them with new findings.
