QUIRKY WORLD: Officer bails out mum who stole items for child’s cake

Officer Michael Kotsonis, 19, responded to a call last week at the Ocean State Job Lots after a woman had stolen cake mix, shortening and “a couple things of frosting,” the Portsmouth Herald reported.
After learning the woman’s identity, Kotsonis went to her home to recover the items. It was there that he found that the woman was a mother who wanted to bake her child a birthday cake.
Kotsonis says the mother’s actions weren’t right, but added: “I’m not going to take away a kid’s birthday cake.”
He went back to the store and bought the items. The woman wasn’t charged.
“I didn’t do it for the attention,” Kotsonis said.
Pennsylvania environmental officials can’t explain why residents of one city thought part of their town smelled like cat urine last year.
The New Castle News reports a state Department of Environmental Protection report was inconclusive.
The department says it’s likely that some kind of waste containing mesityl oxide mixed with some kind of sulphur compound to create the smell.
But air samples and testing of substances at the city’s sewage treatment plant didn’t turn up a source of the substances.
Mesityl oxide is used in paint removers, as a solvent and in insect repellents.
Kash finally made it home after a few days.
Allison Fewless says her 650lb calf was found wandering in the woods on Tuesday in Grand Traverse County in northern Michigan, two days after he ran away during a walk.
The teenager told The Grand Rapids Press that Kash had travelled 7km from home in the Kingsley area. Allison says her calf will be competing soon at the Michigan State University Winter Beef Classic.
She says she’s just happy that “my moo is home”.

The Library has also announced the acquisition of the personal archive of actor Williams, including 42 personal diaries and approximately 2,000 letters spanning his entire life and career from the age of 18 until his death in 1988.
Walking slowly may be an early sign of Alzheimer’s in older people at risk of dementia.
Scientists studied 128 people with an average age of 76 who had displayed evidence of impaired memory.
Scans showed that 48% of the group had a build-up of beta amyloid protein fragments in their brains — one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. These individuals were also more likely to walk at a slower speed.
