David Cameron says police should shoot-to-kill in the event of a terrorist attack

David Cameron said officers must be clear that if they have to kill a terrorist to save lives, “they should go right ahead do so”.

He spoke after Mr Corbyn had said he was “not happy” with the idea of a shoot-to-kill policy in the UK, remarks that forced shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn to say Labour supports the use of lethal force to save lives in a terror attack.

Cameron criticised Corbyn’s comments after Tory Angela Watkinson asked: “Given the extreme circumstances of a Paris-type attack in London, do you think that depriving the police of the right to shoot to kill would make the public safer?”

Cameron: “No, I absolutely don’t.

"And I hope that the leader of the opposition will review his remarks because, frankly, when you are combating a terrorist attack, and if you look at what happened in Paris, it was an attack, it wasn’t a siege, it wasn’t taking hostages and setting out demands.

"It was an attempt to kill as many people as possible.

“When the police are confronted by that, they must be absolutely clear that if they have to take out a terrorist to save lives, they should go right ahead and do so.”
