45 militants dead after breaking fast

About 45 Islamic State (IS) militants have reportedly died in Mosul, Iraq, after breaking their Ramadan fast.

According to Haaretz, after nearly 145 people ate their iftar meal in Mosul, 45 of them were found dead.

It remained unclear whether the militants died of food poisoning or if they were purposefully poisoned, said a Kurdish Democratic Party spokesperson.

Mosul, with a population of more than 1m people, was captured by IS fighters in June and is the largest city in the group’s self-declared caliphate, a stretch of territory that straddles the border between northern Iraq and eastern Syria.

Meanwhile, purported supporters of IS hacked the website of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog and threatened its Syrian director, who has documented abuses on all sides of Syria’s war.

The Britain-based observatory tracks the conflict using sources on the ground. It took down its website after the online attack from a group calling itself the Cyber Army of the Khilafah.

The hackers posted the face of observatory director Rami Abdulrahman superimposed over a hostage wearing an orange jumpsuit and kneeling next to an IS militant holding a knife.

IS has posted several videos showing captives in orange jumpsuits being beheaded, including journalists and aid workers.

The hackers also posted a message in English and Arabic using threatening and derogatory language in reference to the group, one of the most comprehensive observers of the war and a major source of information on the ground.
