QUIRKY WORLD: Man writes five-star review after week on bridge

Simon Anderton, 56, scaled the Newcastle landmark on Father’s Day and plans to spend another week with just the noisy gulls for company.

During his stay, Anderton, from Heaton, Newcastle, wrote a tongue-in-cheek online review of the “draughty” accommodation which he praises for its central location and “spectacular views”.

He is campaigning for Real Fathers for Justice following a lengthy legal battle.

Beaver attack

USA: A beaver protecting its dam attacked two central Oregon men, who fell into a river and were taken to the hospital.

Sgt William Bailey of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office says the men were exploring when they climbed onto a beaver dam and were attacked by the animal protecting its turf.

Bailey says their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Truffle dogs in demand

FRANCE: The growing appetite for truffles is feeding demand for dogs trained to sniff out the pungent fungus prized by chefs and foodies.

As more landowners plant orchards in hopes of harvesting truffles, more dogs are being trained to detect the earthy delicacies, which take several years to ripen on tree roots underground.

“There is huge demand for truffle dogs right now,” said Alana McGee, co-founder of the Truffle Dog Company, which helps orchard owners search for truffles and trains dogs how to find them in orchards or in the wild.

“Truffle-hunting is right up their alley. It’s fun for the dogs. They get rewarded for using their noses, which is how they see the world.”

Time stands still

USA: Global time will stand still today, delaying midnight by a second.

An extra sliver of time — a ‘leap second’ — is being added to the world’s clocks to adjust for the inaccuracy of the spinning Earth.

The latest pause — the 26th — will occur today at 23:59:59 co-ordinated universal time (UTC), which is an hour behind Irish Summer Time.

Computer programmers try to take account of leap seconds, but many systems could be caught out, warns atomic clock expert Judah Levine, from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado.

Big ambitions

VENEZUELA: At only 26 years of age, Jesus Casanova has earned a degree in journalism, is the owner of a South American swimming championship, and last year was crowned Mister Venezuela in the beauty- obsessed nation. Now he wants to add a new title to his achievements: Congressman.

Along with a cadre of athletes, hip-hop artists and TV personalities, Casanova was one of several minor celebrities, most of them political novices, who competed in primaries to select candidates for the ruling socialist party for December’s legislative elections.

Profitable error

USA: A man in Connecticut, who mistakenly bought the wrong lottery ticket is $30,000 wealthier.

Bob Sabo, of Easton, says he didn’t want to wait in line to buy a lottery ticket, so, for the first time, he decided to buy a ticket from a lottery vending machine.

Sabo says he meant to buy two $20 tickets, but says he didn’t have his glasses on and instead bought a $30 ticket. When he got home, he discovered the ticket was a winner.

Disney bans selfie sticks

USA: Walt Disney Co has banned selfie sticks at its theme parks worldwide, including in Paris, joining a growing list of attractions that restrict the accessory for safety reasons.

Disney tried allowing selfie sticks in the park but not on rides, according to Prunty. However, violators were forcing park staff to stop rides for extended periods of time, including last Wednesday when a roller coaster was shut down at Disneyland, frustrating other guests.

From now on, guests with selfie sticks will be asked to put them in a storage facility.

Car thief loses his way

USA: Police say a New York City man driving a stolen car took the wrong road and ended up lost and without petrol in Pennsylvania.

State police say 26-year-old Cristian Osorio left Queens early Friday and was headed to Syracuse, New York.

However, he got lost and ended up on the side of Route 33 in Plainfield, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. That’s when a state trooper arrived to help and discovered the car was stolen.
