QUIRKY WORLD ... President dares opposition to find his gold toilet
Erdogan’s office extended the invitation following accusations by secular party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu and other opposition parties of excessive spending of taxpayers’ money by the president on luxuries.
Erdogan told state-run TRT television that he would resign if Kilicdaroglu found a gold-plated toilet seat at the €567m palace. He also challenged Kilicdaroglu to resign if none is found.
A US recycling centre is looking for a woman who dropped off an old Apple computer that turned out to be worth $200,000 (€183,000).
The computer was inside boxes of electronics that she had cleaned out from her garage after her husband died, said Victor Gichun, vice-president of Clean Bay Area, in California’s Silicon Valley.
She did not want a tax receipt or leave her contact information, and it was not until a few weeks later that workers opened the boxes to discover a highly collectible Apple I computer inside.
The San Jose Mercury News reports that the machine was one of only about 200 first-generation desktop computers assembled by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ron Wayne in 1976.
“We really couldn’t believe our eyes. We thought it was fake,” Gichun told KNTV-TV.
The recycling firm sold the Apple I for $200,000 to a private collection, and because the company gives 50% of items sold back to the original owner, Gichun said he wants to split the proceeds with the mystery donor.
A woman who breached a court order barring her from causing nuisance by making “loud sex noises” was sent to jail.
Gemma Wale, of Small Heath, Birmingham, was given a two-week prison sentence after a civil court judge concluded that she had breached the order by “screaming and shouting whilst having sex” at a “level of noise” which annoyed a neighbour.
Judge Emma Kelly, at Birmingham County Court,concluded that Wale had breached an anti-social behaviour order.
Art lovers will be encouraged to fall asleep at a new exhibition featuring a pair of roving robotic beds.
Two visitors to the Hayward Gallery exhibition, Carsten Holler: Decision, will be able to stay overnight at the building on London’s South Bank and sleep in the specially-adapted beds.
The beds, which will travel less than 3ft a minute, are programmed to avoid obstacles and use a system of lasers and radio beacons to get around.
A designer handbag has smashed a world auction record.
Christie’s auction house said the crocodile-skin Birkin bag in fuchsia with gold and diamond hardware sold for HK$1.72m (€203,000).
The previous record for a handbag was set at a US auction in 2011 for another Birkin creation, in red crocodile skin, that sold for $203,150. The Birkin bag was designed for and named after British actress Jane Birkin. It is famous for having a price tag in the thousands and a years-long waiting list.
