USA: An Oklahoma school expressed concern and disappointment over a video that went viral showing students in a biology class performing a choreographed dance routine with dead cats.

QUIRKY WORLD ... Not the cat’s meow...claws out over lab dance routine

In the video, students dressed in lab coats at Oklahoma City’s Harding Charter Preparatory High School hold dead cats that were to be used for dissection and manipulate the animals in a set of moves to music used in a cat food jingle.

“Animals should be treated and handled with respect and dignity, a standard that was not upheld in this instance,” the school said in a statement.

“These students made a mistake and they will most likely make other mistakes in their lives,” it said.

The video was made by former students in the autumn of 2013. It went viral this week after it was posted on social media by an animal rights group.

Face-off in China

CHINA:

Beijing police are patrolling the city’s subways and trains to stop people wearing face masks, strange costumes, and forming flash mobs, warning commuters that such actions could jeopardise public safety by causing stampedes.

State news agency Xinhua said law enforcement teams, which started the patrols on May 1, and have encountered 83 cases of “improper behaviour”, including hawking and begging.

Costumes and masks are likely to attract the attention of other passengers, Xinhua quoted Liang Jianwei, vice head of the Beijing municipal traffic administration corps, as saying. “When a lot of people stop to watch, the risk of stampedes increases.”

Sticky mess

USA:

The driver of a semitrailer carrying over 13m honeybees that overturned and scattered hives on a Washington highway last month has been fined $550 (€485).

The wreck backed up traffic for miles. Beekeepers scrambled to save as many bees as they could, but eventually firefighters sprayed foam on the hives, killing the insects used for pollinating crops as a safety measure.

The Daily Herald in Everett reported that the Washington State Patrol cited the driver with second-degree negligent driving. Trooper Mark Francis said the man was driving too fast.

Beatles lesson

ENGLAND:

Teenagers could study the Beatles and learn to DJ as part of a new music GCSE.

The Fab Four’s famous album St Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is part of a new course expected to be introduced next year, with pupils asked to examine three tracks — ‘Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds’, ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and’ Within You, Without You’.

Replica castle

AUSTRALIA:

A full-sized replica of Edinburgh Castle is to be built in Australia as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo travels for a rare overseas performance.

About 1,200 pipers, drummers, dancers, and musicians will take part in a three-night run of the show in Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium next February.

The Tattoo is traditionally staged on the floodlit esplanade of Edinburgh Castle and organisers have decided they will keep the backdrop by building a replica of the landmark for the Australian shows.

Lighting up hearts

AUSTRIA:

Some Vienna pedestrian traffic lights are suddenly not only red or green. They’re also gay or straight.

The city has started setting up lights at crossings that show pairs of figures instead of the usual stick men. Some show a man and a woman. Others, two women. Still others, two men. All couples are complete with hearts.
