British police have launched an investigation into the comments of a Ukip candidate who appeared to make racial slurs and threaten to shoot an opponent.

Robert Blay, a prospective parliamentary candidate in North East Hampshire, was shown in a video published by the Daily Mirror making comments about Tory opponent Ranil Jayawardena if he were to become prime minister.

The ex-Conservative made the comments to investigators from the newspaper at a public meeting on Saturday in Ramsgate, which was addressed by party leader Nigel Farage.
