Queen’s staff threaten action in UK
Castle staff start on £14,400 (€19,680) per year — earning less than the living wage — and carry out extra duties for no extra pay.
The Public and Commercial Services union said that if its members vote in favour, non-strike action would start at the end of April.
The dispute affects around 120 union members who work at the castle’s visitor services, including guides and kitchen staff.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “These workers are loyal to their employer and absolutely committed to ensuring visitors are given the royal treatment.
“It is scandalous that staff are so appallingly paid and expected to do work for free that brings in money for the royal family.”
Should a ballot pass, the action would be the first ever by staff working for the royals, said the Public and Commercial Services Union.
The union said low-paid staff are expected to carry out extra unpaid duties such as giving tours and acting as foreign language interpreters at the 900-year-old castle west of London.
It said staff must stop performing “goodwill” duties.
