A-listers to flock to Venice for Clooney wedding

A string of A-list celebrities is expected to gather in Venice this weekend for one of the most exclusive jet-set events of the year: the wedding of US actor George Clooney to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

Due to privacy concerns, no official information is available about the four-day fest, which starts tonight. Unconfirmed reports suggest Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Bono, Cindy Crawford, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are among the attendees.

The 36-year-old, Lebanese-born Alamuddin, who is usually based in London, was seen at Milan airport on Wednesday, while there have been no sightings of Clooney so far. The bride-to-be held a garment bag from the Stella McCartney fashion label, possibly containing her wedding dress.

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and US pop star Lana Del Rey are expected to provide musical entertainment, the Corriere del Veneto newspaper wrote.

Guests will be ferried from the Hotel Cipriano, on the island of Giudecca, to the Aman Resort on the Grand Canal, Venice’s only seven-star hotel.

It will be Clooney’s second wedding, after his 1989-93 union with actress Talia Balsam. He is often seen in Venice — usually to attend the city’s film festival. He also owns a villa overlooking Lake Como

While the Aman Hotel will host the weekend’s big wedding celebration, the actual civil ceremony is expected to take place in one of two palazzi owned by Venice council.

The 53-year-old is said to have asked former Rome mayor Walter Veltroni to officiate a civil wedding ceremony on Monday.

Crawford’s husband Rande Gerber is expected to be the best man, while Alamuddin’s sister Tala will be the maid of honour.

Clooney announced plans to tie the knot in Venice this month, saying he had met his bride-to-be in Italy, and “will marry in Venice, of all places”.
