Depardieu: I drink up to 14 bottles of wine a day
Despite a quintuple heart bypass operation 14 years ago and a motorcycle crash while over the legal limit, the actor confessed that he can drink vast quantities of alcohol — beginning from 10am.
He attributed his massive consumption of alcohol to “boredom”.
In an interview with French film magazine, So Film, he also revealed he shot two lions “in self-defence” after his transport broke down.
He said: “I can’t drink like a normal person. I can absorb 12, 13, 14 bottles per day. In the morning, it starts at home with champagne or red wine before 10am, then again champagne.”
He went on to say he interrupts his wine intake with a little aniseed liqueur pastis. Then food, along with by two bottles of wine. “In the afternoon, champagne, beer and more pastis at around 5pm, to finish off the bottle.
“Later on, vodka and/or whiskey. But I’m never totally drunk, just a little pissed.
“All you need is a 10-minute nap and voila, a slurp of rose wine and I feel as fresh as a daisy.
“Anyway, I’m not going to die. Not now. I still have energy.”
Of his holiday in Africa he said he was pushing his truck along a track after it broke down and the lions wouldn’t budge despite him firing a warning shot.
“I killed two lions once, and I understand why the lion is the king of the jungle. In legitimate self- defence.
“Imagine you’re driving and your engine breaks down. You got out, and in your way are these animals. So you shoot, just to scare them.
“They don’t move. I wasn’t there for hunting. I was in Africa for Africa.”
Depardieu, who claims to have handed over more than €146m in French taxes in his lifetime, was presented with his Russian passport by the president, Vladimir Putin, in order to escape paying higher taxes in his homeland.
French mental health expert Professor Michel Lejoyeux condemned Depardieu’s drinking.
“A consumption of 14 bottles a day is beyond all data, all thresholds and health references of the World Health Organisation.
“This is proof of the positive vision we have of alcohol poisoning.”
