Senator laughs off ‘rich and well-hung’ remark as fun radio
Jacqui Lambie, a member of the Palmer United Party, founded by mining magnate Clive Palmer, says members of her staff had been inundated with abusive phone calls since her cringe-worthy interview on Tuesday.
âWhat I donât appreciate is people that are ringing the office and abusing the staff and on radio I wouldnât even repeat some of the words that are coming out of their mouths,â Lambie said.
âTheyâre degrading themselves by the way theyâre speaking to them and the words coming out of their mouth are disgraceful.â
âIf I canât let me hair down a little bit and make a joke on a breakfast radio show to lighten peopleâs day then I think weâre in a bit of trouble.â
Lambie told Tasmaniaâs Heart 107.3 that she had not been in a relationship for more than a decade.
When the breakfast hosts suggested they help her find love, the mother-of-two replied: âNow they must have heaps of cash and theyâve got to have a package between their legs, letâs be honest.â
The 43-year-oldâs comments prompted a young male listener to ring in to say he was confident he met her criteria, in part because he had inherited some money and had experience with older women.
âIâm just a bit concerned because youâre so young,â she said.
âIâm not sure youâd be able to handle Jacqui Lambie,â the outspoken politician, who served a decade in Australiaâs armed forces, said.
The senator then asked: âAre you well-hung?â
âLike a donkey,â he replied.
As the hosts tried to get the pair together on a date, the man rang off.
Lambie later apologised for her comments which followed a string of unrelated questions by the breakfast hosts, including how she took care of hairy legs, bikini line and underarms.
âWhen Kim and Dave on Hobartâs Heart FM 107.3 this morning asked me about my love life in a light-hearted segment â I tried to cover up my embarrassment by making a joke,â Lambie said.
âA lot of people laughed, some people may have got offended.â
âI donât regret saying what I said.
âLike I said, it was a good fun radio showâ
She was accused of double standards, however.
âIn recent months, Tony Abbott has weathered howling storms for suggesting a Liberal candidate had sex appeal,â wrote Judith Ireland in Fairfax Media.
âAnd for winking when a talkback caller revealed she worked on a sex line
â⊠And yet, Lambie is sure to stroll away from her Heart appearance and into her next set of public comments with nary a scratch.â
