MOUNTAIN RESCUE

QUIRKY WORLD... Flip-flop-shod climber is peak of stupidity

The man and two friends were exploring Aonach Mor near Fort William when he slipped, causing Lochaber Mountain Rescue team to be called out. A message on the team’s Facebook page said: “Well, he had never seen snow before, so why not give it a go in yer bare feet and sandals!!!”

It is understood the men took the gondola up the mountain — a sister peak of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis — and set off to reach a snow patch. One of the injured man’s companions was barefoot when the rescue team reached them, and the other was wearing trainers.

CASHLESS SHOPPING

ENGLAND: A shopping street is going cashless for the day as part of a “social experiment”.

A bakery, a hairdressers, a convenience store, a deli, bars, restaurants, and boutiques are among the stores in Beech Rd, Chorlton, Manchester, to trade without notes or coins. The innovation is the idea of card payment provider Handepay, which supplies more than 22,000 businesses across the country with card payment terminals.

Mark Latham, product and innovation director at Handepay, said: “We’re carrying less cash in our pockets than ever before and Britain is at the forefront of countries heading towards being cashless because the public are always eager to embrace new technology.”

A DOG’S LIFE

CHINA: Residents in a southern Chinese city tried to avoid protests over their annual summer solstice festival — in which thousands of dogs are slaughtered for food — by holding their feasts early to avoid attention.

Under the Yulin tradition, eating dog, the lychee tropical fruit, and drinking alcohol on the solstice is supposed to make people stay healthy during the winter.

State media carried photos showing residents of Yulin gathering last weekend to celebrate the longest day of the year — ahead of the actual solstice — tucking into plates of meat and vegetables around dining tables strewn with lychees. Reports said they wanted to avoid protests by animal rights activists.

ANCIENT FOOD

ENGLAND: Food offerings left in a royal tomb in the ancient city of Ur at least 4,500 years ago have been found on top of a university cupboard.

Researchers at the University of Bristol found the large wooden box during a clear-out in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology.

The box was filled with pottery, seeds and animal bones and contained words such as ‘pre-dynastic’, ‘sargonid’, and ‘royal tombs’ written on index cards.

Further investigation revealed that these were the remains of food offerings from a royal tomb at least 4,500 years old. It is believed the remains were collected during famous excavations by Leonard Woolley in the site of Ur in southern Iraq during the 1920s and 1930s.

WEDDING WOE

USA: A couple who appeared on reality TV series My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding face charges after a real-life wedding in which the rings disappeared.

Police said 24-year-old Elvis Boswell and 22-year-old Eden Boswell of Princeton, West Virginia, were arrested and charged with felony larceny. Eden Boswell was maid of honour at a wedding where, according to a police report, the bride realised her purse with the wedding rings and $1,000 (€735) was missing.

Officers believe Eden Boswell took the purse while her husband waited outside, but the couple locked themselves out of their pick-up truck and when officers arrived they found the purse, rings and some of the cash.
