QUIRKY WORLD... Oh boy: No makeup in driving licence picture

USA: The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles says a boy who dresses as a girl may not have his driver’s licence photo retaken wearing makeup.

QUIRKY WORLD... Oh boy: No makeup in driving licence picture

A New York group known as the Transgender Legal Defence & Education Fund wrote to the DMV last week requesting that 16-year-old Chase Culpepper be allowed to have a new photo dressed as he normally does. The organisation said the youth regularly wears makeup and androgynous or girls’ clothing.

In March, Culpepper was told at the DMV office in Anderson he could not have his photo taken with women’s makeup and the defence fund says that violates his free speech rights.

Beth Parks, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Motor Vehicles, said the agency has received the letter and will be responding that a new photo will not be permitted.

ARIZONA EATERY SHAMES ART THIEVES ON FACEBOOK

USA: Two accomplices in the theft of a painting at a Flagstaff restaurant have come forward after a shaming campaign on Facebook.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported Tyler Christensen, the owner of McMillan Bar and Kitchen, went to social media instead of police after the painting went missing on June 9. Christensen posted an open letter and surveillance photo of a man putting the painting in his backpack while the two accomplices acted as lookouts.

He says the two accomplices have since come forward and given $500 to cover the cost of the artwork.

The painting, however, was last seen hanging from a tree.

CLEVER CLOCK

ENGLAND: An alarm clock which tells users the best way to get to work by monitoring the weather conditions has been developed to encourage low carbon travel.

The alarm picks up weather and travel reports through an RSS wifi feed, calculating the travel time needed to get to work, according to the weather, a University of Brighton spokesman said.

Act Alarm clock, developed by Samuel Young, a sustainable product design student at the university, has three main functions: a projector displaying data on the ceiling when the alarm is triggered, a three-day weather report, and personal incentives on burning calories and financial savings to make travel less stressful.

JOEY’S DAY OUT

SCOTLAND: The first koala to be born in Britain has enjoyed his first climb outdoors.

Yooranah was born at Edinburgh Zoo in May last year and has been waiting for the weather to warm up before being allowed on the outdoor koala climbing frame. The koala joey was born the size of a jelly bean so keepers thought Yooranah was previously too young to be let loose in the outdoor area.

When the weather is good, the keepers take the koalas out of their heated enclosures to soak in vitamin D from sunlight, while enjoying the sights of the zoo from their perch.

JAIL FAIL

USA: A man has been arrested and charged after he tried to throw a football loaded with drugs and mobile phones into the yard of a state prison in Michigan.

The throw in Jackson fell short, with the football — which reportedly contained heroin, marijuana, tobacco, three mobile phones and chargers — landing between two fences, not in the yard where prisoners exercise.

PROPERTY PROBLEM

USA: A developer who mistakenly built a $1.8m waterfront house on parkland has been ordered to remove it.

The Rhode Island Supreme Court found the Narragansett home was built entirely on land owned by the Rose Nulman Park Foundation and must be removed. The developer, Four Twenty Corp, began building the home in 2009, but it did not discover the error until 2011. It argued it should not be penalised for an innocent surveying mistake. The court said the park’s property rights outweighed that.
