Diner sues McDonald’s for $1.5m after being refused extra napkins

QUIRKY WORLD ... A daily look at some of the world’s stranger stories

USA: A man is suing McDonald’s for $1.5m (€1.09m) because he says he suffered emotional distress after only receiving one napkin with his order.

The man, Webster Lucas, ordered a Quarter Pounder Deluxe in Pacoima, California, last month.

He says he confronted the manager to ask for more napkins and when the manager allegedly refused, Lucas retorted that he should have gone somewhere else.

Then, Lucas alleges the manager made a racist comment, mumbling “something about ‘you people’,”. Lucas is African-American. He emailed customer service, and was offered free burgers, which he refused.

LAMB-FLAVOURED BEER

WALES: A brewer has created a new beer with Welsh lamb to mark St David’s Day.

Conwy Brewery said its Sunday Toast has infused lamb in the brewing process, combining the aromas of a Sunday roast with a dark ale. The North Wales brewery slow-roasted Welsh lamb before adding the dissolved meat juices and sugar and keeping the brew warm for a week.

STATION SALE

ENGLAND: A former London Underground station that was used as a Second World War command centre has been sold for £53m (€64.27m).

Brompton Road Tube station, in an expensive corner of London near Harrods, was put on the market in September by the Ministry of Defence as part of cost-cutting efforts. It is expected to be used for mainly residential development, with the money from the sale going back into the defence budget.

SPEED RAGE

USA: A rabbi accused of impersonating a police officer as he lashed out at slower drivers has pleaded guilty.

Alfredo Borodowski pleaded guilty in Mamaroneck Village Court, New York State, to second-degree harassment. He will get no jail time or probation if he stays out of trouble for a year, The Journal News says.

Authorities say slow drivers enraged Borodowski. In one incident he confronted a woman driving in a school zone and held up a fake badge while yelling. The rabbi asked for forgiveness outside court. He has received psychiatric treatment and says he wants to be a “voice” for people with mental illness

COLD COMFORT

USA: Four University of Utah students who, police say, were caught smoking pot in an igloo are facing possible discipline from campus officials.

The well-camouflaged hideaway was discovered by a passing campus security guard in woods on the campus. It was about five feet tall and had walls of snow about 10 inches thick.

The guard heard voices and smelled pot before finding the four men inside. One of the students was cited for marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

ARK COMEBACK

USA: A Christian ministry’s long-stalled plans to build Noah’s Ark in the hills of Kentucky have been revived.

Creation Museum founder Ken Ham announced that a municipal bond offering has raised enough money to begin construction on the Ark Encounter project, estimated to cost about $73m.

Groundbreaking is planned for May and the ark is expected to be finished by the summer of 2016.

Ham said a high-profile evolution debate he had with American TV’s “Science Guy” Bill Nye earlier this month helped boost support for the project. Nye said he was “heartbroken and sickened for the Commonwealth of Kentucky” after learning that the project would move forward.
