Aunt in dramatic battle to save nephew’s life
Little Sebastian had stopped breathing on a highway in the US state of Florida.
His aunt screamed for help after pulling over to the side of the road while stuck in a traffic jam.
Not only was photojournalist Al Diaz also stuck in the traffic jam, a police officer and two fire-fighters happened to be nearby.
Distraught Pamela Rauseo, 37, tried to help Sebastian, who has suffered from respiratory problems after his premature birth. The child was turning blue when others came to her aid.
Diaz told the Miami Herald, the newspaper which he works for, that he heard Ms Rauseo say: “the baby can’t breathe.”
“My sister had trusted me with him,” she said.
Fellow drivers and emergency workers gathered around to try to save the baby. Lucila Godoy, 34 left her three-year-old son in her car to perform CPR on Sebastian.
Mr Diaz then located police officer Amauris Bastidas who took over performing CPR.
“He started breathing and crying. Then he started not breathing again,” Mr Bastidas said.
Anthony Trim and Alvaro Tonanez from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue service joined police staff just as Sebastian began breathing again.
Paramedics eventually arrived and the infant is now in a stable condition.
