Man kills family with machete
Jutast Csanad Horvath, 24, was detained near the scene of the killings in an area of moorland in the village of Kulcs, around 60km outside the capital, Budapest.
The MTI state news agency quoted police sources as saying Horvath had killed his father, his grandparents and his older brother following a row.
His mother, sister and a close relative were also badly injured in the attack and were now being treated in hospital.
“There were several wounds on the bodies of the victims caused by a thrusting and cutting tool... It was a brutal act, that’s all I can say,” said police spokesman Laszlo Garamvolgyi.
Horvath probably used a large machete in the attack, he added.
Police said Horvath’s motive was not yet clear. The injured were being treated in hospital and were not yet in a suitable condition to be questioned.
An anti-terrorism squad dashed to the village of Kulcs after neighbours made frantic calls to police.
Police said in a statement that Horvath was found hiding in brushes not far from the scene of the crimes, and did not resist the arrest.
Residents of the small village were in shock.
“We are shocked, paralysed. We never thought this could happen in such a quiet little village,” said Mihaly Sinka, who lived near where the killings took place.
“Had I left my house two minutes earlier, he could have slaughtered me.”
Kulcs mayor Csaba Kiss said: “The tragedy occurred in an ordinary family,” adding that they did not have close ties with the local community.
Horvath’s father worked in the construction business and had served a jail term for fraud related to state benefits.
Some 135 police officers, along with boats and helicopters, took part in the hunt for the killer.
