Jury member Katrina Brown said 38-year-old Black used “very insubstantial and often surprising materials” including bath bombs, lipstick and soil in her work which she described as having a “vulnerable beauty”.

Her work Left Right, Left Right is a rectangle of soil, sand and gravel.

The other three artists on the shortlist are fellow Glaswegian Martin Boyce, Hilary Lloyd and George Shaw.

Boyce creates installations inspired by concrete trees “evoking the urban landscape”.

Lloyd’s “slightly voyeuristic” work is typified by video screens and projectors showing scenes.

Shaw’s work is made up of scenes from his childhood home in Coventry.

The exhibition is held at the Baltic in Gateshead from October 21 and the winner will be announced on December 5. The winner receives £25,000 (€27,800) and the other artists receive £5,000.
