18% believe Obama is Muslim
The number who think he is a Muslim is 18%, up from the 11% who said so in 2009. The proportion who correctly say he is a Christian is down to 34%. The largest share of people, 43%, said they don’t know his religion.
The survey, by the non-partisan Pew Research Centre and its affiliated Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, is based on interviews before the controversy over whether Muslims should be permitted to construct a mosque near the World Trade Centre site.
