Baby cheats death after falling under train
CCTV footage was released of the youngster’s brush with death in Melbourne, Australia.
CCTV footage shows the boy’s mother momentarily taking her hands off the three-wheeler pram’s handles and failing to notice as it slowly edges towards the tracks.
The mum suddenly spots the baby carrier picking up speed and she rushes with outstretched arms to try to save her young child.
But the pram tips over the edge of the platform and the baby slams onto the tracks head first.
The mother panics as she looks back and sees the oncoming train hit the stroller.
The driver used the emergency brakes but the pushchair was still dragged about 50 metres along the rails.
Australia’s Herald Sun said the train ploughed into the pram at about 35km/h, dragging the child along beneath the front carriage.
When it stopped, a member of the public jumped onto the tracks and grabbed the little boy.
The fact the baby was strapped into his pram at the time probably saved his life, according to paramedics.
Paramedic Jon Wright said the six-month-old just “needed a feed and a nap”. Police said he had “superficial injuries to his head”, but was otherwise unscathed.
He was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and was discharged later in the day.
Police transit division Sergeant Michael Ferwerda said the mother had not done anything wrong, but the incident was a timely reminder for people to be careful at train stations.
“It is amazing how many people get too close to the tracks despite the dangers,” he said yesterday.
“We’ve had a lucky escape and it is a chance for commuters to heed warnings to be more careful."
