Michael Walker and his friend Clarence Williams had been taking a midnight tour of Paris with a cab driver whom they had asked to get them some cannabis.

After picking up the drugs the driver spotted the wreckage of the car.

Mr Walker took several shots, only realising the princess had been involved when he saw the story later on CNN.

He contacted CNN but they were not interested in buying his photographs as they “would have preferred video”, said his statement to the Metropolitan Police.

Mr Walker said he “co-operated” with the English press, who copied the photographs. After smoking more cannabis, he decided he was going to charge “$1,000 per interview” and there wasalso a “$1,000-a-time” price tag for copies of hisphotographs, one of which he spotted in the National Inquirer.

He thinks he spoke to the ABC and NBC networks plus some newspapers and AP. He did an interview at the tunnel with CBS “and again charged $1,000”.
