Ocean’s stars make a splash
The actors were promoting their new casino caper Ocean’s Thirteen, which received its world premiere in Cannes last night.
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey also appears in the third in the lucrative franchise, directed by Steven Soderbergh, while Al Pacino has a lead role as a greedy casino boss.
The cast also stars Ocean’s regulars Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Briton Eddie Izzard.
The film, screened to critics yesterday morning, contains a joke about Pitt’s personal life when Clooney’s character Danny Ocean tells him: “Try to settle down, have a couple of kids”, and Pitt’s character Rusty responds with a smile.
But when Clooney, 46, was asked whether he wanted to marry, he replied simply “no”.
Pacino is a newcomer to the Ocean’s set. Producer Jerry Weintraub said: “Al Pacino asked me what the other actors thought of him, because they were all friends and had worked with each other on several films now.
“I told him ’What did you think of (Marlon) Brando when you did The Godfather? That’s what they thought of you.”
Pitt, 43, joked about working with Pacino: “Naturally he was nervous. He seemed to take notes from each of us, but settled in after a few weeks.”
Asked if there would be an Ocean’s 14, Clooney joked: “I want to do musicals. That’s where my heart lies” adding of the Ocean’s films: “We’ve kind of sapped that tree.”
Soderbergh, who won the Cannes Palme d’Or in 1989 with Sex, Lies, and Videotape, said: “We made a rule that we weren’t going to bring anyone on to the movie that had a reputation for being unpleasant.”
He said of the actors: “They don’t leave the set and the conversation is flowing, it is always interesting. There are a lot of bright people, very well read people here.”
The film laments the changes that have taken place in the Las Vegas.
Clooney said: “I have a sense of nostalgia about most eras. I like it when people put on suits for casinos, now it’s shorts and espadrilles."
