Holy cow: Batmobile sells for £120,000 at auction
The Batmobile — which had been estimated to sell for £75,000 (€56,000) — attracted telephone bids from around the world but eventually sold to a bidder present at the auction for £119,100 (€90,000).
The car was built in 1966 to tour the USA, promoting the TV series starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as his sidekick, Robin.
It was built by Jay Orhberg, of Jay Ohrberg Star Cars in Hollywood, California, and is believed to be the sixth Batmobile.
The price included a photograph of the original Batmobile, signed by West and car creator George Barris.
A Robin Reliant van used in the TV show Only Fools and Horses sold for more than £40,000 (€30,000). The three-wheeled van, bearing the company logo Trotters Independent Trading Co, New York, Paris, Peckham, sold for £44,227.50 (€33,400) — more than double its estimate.
The car, the second made for the show was used from series six onwards.
It was sold at the Coys of Kensington auction at the Royal Horticultural Hall.
Coys PR director David Barzilay said: “We are staggered with the prices for those two cars. It’s just amazing.”
A Ferrari owned by musician Chris Rea, commissioned to resemble Phil Hill’s Ferrari 196SP from the 1960s, sold for £28,000 (€21,000), less than its estimate of £38,000-£45,000.
A 1924 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster which was first owned by World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Dempsey did not sell at auction although an offer has been received from an overseas collector. It had been estimated to sell for £150,000-£170,000.
The cars were lots in the Coys Spring Classics auction which featured hundreds of cars and items of motoring memorabilia.
