At least 41 killed in stampede after rally in Yemen

A STAMPEDE during a campaign rally yesterday for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh killed at least 41 people and injured more than 50 — most of them schoolchildren and teenagers, officials said.

The stampede occurred in a small stadium in Ibb, 190 kilometres south of the capital Sana’a, where Mr Saleh was addressing a group of people.

Officials at Thawra Hospital said 20 bodies were brought there. At Al-Nasser hospital, officials revised their death toll to 21 from 12 after some of the people taken there died from their injuries.
