Man accused of shoving phone down girl’s throat
But Marlon Brando Gill’s defence team claimed Melinda Abell had swallowed the phone on purpose to prevent him seeing who she had been calling.
The 25-year-old had to have it removed in hospital.
Gill, 24, from Kansas City, is accused of first-degree assault, a felony.
Ms Abell wrote in a statement to police after the incident: “I think he thought I’d been talking to other guys ... He took my phone to see who I had been calling ... If I didn’t want him to see my phone, I would have just thrown it out the window and busted it.”
Yesterday, she testified she could not remember how the phone got in her throat, saying she drank too much that night. She said she could not recall writing the statement, but it was allowed as evidence.
She also claimed Gill was controlling and alleged he had verbally and physically abused her.
Under cross-examination, she acknowledged she never told police about the alleged abuse until the phone incident.
