Maoist guerrillas call strike

THE start of a three-day strike called by Maoist guerrillas battling to overthrow the Nepalese government brought normal life in the country to a standstill yesterday, as roads were emptied of vehicles and schools and businesses closed over fears of rebel attacks.

Suspected guerrillas also exploded at least four bombs in the Nepalese capital in an apparent effort to reinforce the seriousness of their strike call.

Police said no one was seriously wounded in the explosions at the city council offices and a private factory.
