TYPHOON Meari lashed Japan’s southern islands yesterday with heavy rains and winds.

One man was reportedly killed and another injured, prompting authorities in Taiwan to issue a warning of rough seas.

Powerful gusts knocked over a 73-year-old man on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, breaking his elbow, an Okinawa police official said.

There are also reports an 88-year-old man died after being blown over by strong winds. The police official said the authorities were aware of his death but had not yet confirmed it was typhoon-related.
