Sandisk’s Dublin move to create 50 jobs

MORE than 50 jobs will result from the transfer by Sandisk of its European and Middle East (EMEA) headquarters from Holland to Dublin.

Sandisk’s Dublin move to create 50 jobs

Ed Moro, vice-president and managing director for Sandisk in EMEA, cited the availability of skilled staff and the good “work ethic” in Ireland as significant factors for moving to Dublin.

It was much more than the low corporation tax, he said.

Europe and the Middle East will form a significant part of the group’s growth going forward, he said.

Outside the US, where the group does 50% of its business, Europe is the next biggest market and will grow strongly.

Sandisk has been growing significantly in recent years.

Turnover has gone from €500m in 2002 to €2.3 billion last year.

Strong growth is anticipated as the group capitalises on the very strong mobile phone market in Europe.

The group is the world’s largest supplier of flash data storage card products, which are cost efficient for a mobile sector struggling to keep costs down.

By using the flash storage cards in their phones, mobile manufacturers keep the cost of providing storage to users to a minimum, while allowing transfer of significant amounts of information, said Mr Moro.

At a news conference in Dublin yesterday, the group said the cost of the transfer was €500,000, while the number of Irish employed out of the 52 will be 30.

Meanwhile, over 200 jobs are to be created in Belfast as part of a £10m (€14.44m) expansion by Reed Managed Services.

The company employs 62 people in Belfast.

The development has been given almost £2m (€2.9m) in grant aid and training support by Invest Northern Ireland INI).

The economic agency’s chief executive Leslie Morrison welcomed the 220 jobs, which he said would contribute £5m (€7.2m) a year in salaries to the local economy.

He said: “This was a mobile investment which could have gone to the Republic of Ireland.

“They chose to expand their Belfast operation because of the strength of the labour market here, the availability of relevant skills and the support being offered by INI.”
