Chicago & Gangs of NY vie for Baftas
Gangs and Chicago both compete for the title of best film at the Baftas, up against The Hours, The Two Towers and The Pianist.
Stars up for the best actor prize include Daniel Day-Lewis for Gangs of New York while Michael Caine is nominated for his role in The Quiet American.
They go up against heavyweight Jack Nicholson for About Schmidt, as well as Nicolas Cage for Adaptation and Adrien Brody who starred in The Pianist.
Chicago's haul included a best actress nomination for Renee Zellweger, but her co-star Catherine Zeta Jones is only up for best supporting role.
The pair had been head to head at the Golden Globes in the US last week, which were dominated by their blockbuster film.
The Hours landed 11 nominations in all including best director, outstanding British film, and four acting prizes including best actress for both Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep.
Kidman, Streep and Zellweger will face Halle Berry for Monster's Ball the role which won last year's Oscar for the best actress prize. Also in their category is Salma Hayek for her performance in Frida.
Zeta Jones is up against her Chicago co-star Queen Latifah, Toni Collette for About A Boy, Julianne Moore for The Hours and Meryl Streep for Adaptation.
The second Lord of the Rings movie The Two Towers competes for nine Baftas, plus the Orange film of the year prize which is voted for by cinemagoers. Although it is not a full Bafta, it will be handed out at the ceremony on February 23.
Despite its massive success at the box office, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets barely gets a look in with just three nominations for technical categories and a further nomination for Orange film of the year.
The Baftas, officially called the Orange British Academy Film Awards, will be held at the Odeon cinema in London's Leicester Square and will be hosted by Stephen Fry.
