HILLARY CLINTON said her decision to stay with her husband after he told her about his affair with Monica Lewinsky was the hardest she’s ever had to make.

Breaking her silence, the former First Lady also revealed cheating husband Bill repeatedly lied to her about his affair until just two days before he was forced to confess it to a grand jury.

"I was furious and getting more so by the second. He just stood there saying over and over again, 'I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I was trying to protect you and Chelsea'."

The US President begged for his wife's forgiveness, but eventually broke down in tears when Hillary told him he would have to confess his sins to their then teenage daughter, Chelsea.

In her explosive book, Living History, she said she did not leave her husband because she wanted to fulfil her obligations as First Lady and Senate candidate.

"I ultimately decided I still loved my husband, although as a wife, I wanted to wring Bill's neck."

The Democratic senator recalled the moment she found out that rumours surrounding her husband's affair were true.

"I could hardly breathe. Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him, 'What do you mean? Why did you lie to me?'."

She said the bitterness remained for months hitting rock-bottom during a vacation they took on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts after he testified in August 1998.

"Buddy, the dog, came along to keep Bill company. He was the only member of our family who was still willing to. I could barely speak to Bill, and when I did, it was a tirade. I read. I walked on the beach. He slept downstairs. I slept upstairs."

Mrs Clinton said her husband's betrayal was especially painful because she had steadfastly believed and even publicly defended him.

She said he initially told her he had innocently befriended Ms Lewinsky, a young White House intern, after she went to him for help about landing a future job.

He claimed he had only "talked to her a few times", Mrs Clinton said.

She said she still loves her husband and working toward her Senate seat helped rebuild their shattered relationship.

Mrs Clinton was paid an advance of €3m towards the €8.8m book deal. The book goes on sale from Monday.
