Nuts ‘cut risk of diabetes’

EATING foods rich in vitamin E, like nuts and wheat germ, could help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, research has revealed.

Researchers in Finland looked at health records and diets of more than 4,000 men and women aged 40 to 69. They found that those with a greater intake of vitamin E and alpha-tocopherol one of the forms of vitamin E were less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who consumed less of the powerful anti-oxidant.

There are eight forms of vitamin E of which alpha-tocopherol is the most useful to the body as it circulates throughout the blood to reach all the body's tissue. Good sources of vitamin E include wheat germ oil, soya bean oil, almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, shrimps and brown rice.
