SPEED limits below 20 miles-per-hour will be introduced when Ireland changes over to a metric system in September.

Changeover will bring in 18mph speed limit

Local authorities will be given the option of bringing in a new speed limit of 30km per hour (18.75mph) in built-up residential areas, areas near schools and in urban centres.

However, the Department of Transport said yesterday the radical lowering of the speed limit would only happen where traffic calming measures had been put in place.
